I led the design and compliance strategy for an electronic invoicing module aimed at meeting Costa Rica’s new government regulations for healthcare providers. My role encompassed understanding strict legal requirements, designing an MVP that served doctors and clinics effectively, and collaborating across business, audit, and development teams. This module not only retained existing clients but generated new revenue by enabling healthcare providers to comply with national invoicing standards with ease.
Goals

Ensure Compliance and Ease of Use: Build a user-friendly invoicing module that fully complies with Costa Rica’s electronic invoicing regulations, tailored for healthcare providers.
Drive Client Retention and Acquisition: Increase revenue by retaining current users and attracting new clients through a compliant and seamless invoicing solution.
Streamline Reporting for Tax Season:
Simplify tax preparation with a reporting feature that generates required legal documentation, adding practical value for clinics and practitioners.
My Role And Responsibilities

As the primary designer, I spearheaded the project by:
Navigating Complex Regulations: Conducted deep research on Costa Rica’s electronic invoicing laws, collaborating with tax auditors to align every feature with compliance standards.
Scoping and MVP Design: Worked with the business team to define a targeted MVP, balancing legal requirements with technical limitations.
User-Centered Design: Created user flows that integrated new data requirements without overwhelming users. Conducted user testing with healthcare professionals to validate ease of use and iterate on flows.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Engaged closely with development to address technical constraints and with the strategy team to align the solution with business goals and timelines.
Design Process
In designing the invoicing module, I applied a full UX/UI design process, emphasizing compliance, simplicity, and user validation:

Research and Compliance
Analyzed existing invoicing tools and collaborated with auditors to identify minimum viable requirements.

Architecture and Card Sorting
Structured the module to reflect intuitive flows and government-mandated data points.

Prototyping and Validation
From paper sketches to interactive prototypes, I iteratively tested designs with healthcare users, adjusting based on feedback.

Component and Interface Design
Built responsive, accessible designs for both desktop and mobile that adhered to strict legal requirements.
ChallengeS

Legal Complexity
Collaborated with auditors to decipher legal documentation, ensuring our module met every technical and regulatory standard.

Technical Constraints
Adapted design flows to integrate seamlessly with an existing backend architecture, balancing innovation with feasibility.

Time Pressure
Met a tight four-month deadline, prioritizing essential features and refining designs to optimize speed without compromising compliance.
